What is Chlamydia?

  • Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a bacteria.
  • It is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI).
  • Chlamydia can affect men and women.
  • 1 in 12 people under 24 who have been tested are infected.
  • Most people won’t have any obvious signs or symptoms, this means you can be infected without knowing.
  • If there are symptoms, they usually show up 1-3 weeks after becoming infected.
  • Chlamydia is easily treated with antibiotics.
  • If left untreated, it can cause longer term health problems including infertility (not being able to have a baby), and pain, especially in the abdomen (area below your belly button).
